Designed by Tom Chan and Melanie Man, Hazuto is a cutting and serving board that combines functionality and style. Inspired by the endless variety of technology products, the designers incorporated contrasting metallic elements to create a visually striking board. The concept was born from a daydreaming moment, where the idea of a chopping board bound by a metal rim seemed engaging and robust. Drawing from their background in metal works, the designers carefully crafted the rim specifications to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal.
While wood boards with metal elements or handles are not new, Hazuto stands out with its one-piece steel rim and corner nook design. The rim not only adds to the board's visual appeal but also prolongs its lifespan by preventing warping. The stainless steel rim provides insulation against knocks and drops, ensuring the board remains sturdy and intact. The screws, strategically placed, contribute to an industrial sensibility, further enhancing the board's robustness. The clean and eye-catching two-tone form of Hazuto makes it a standout piece in any kitchen.
The realization of Hazuto involves meticulous attention to detail and the use of high-quality materials. The designers selected Black Walnut for the wood type due to its moderate hardness, which prevents knife dulling and easy denting. The rich dark color of the wood elevates the board beyond the ordinary bamboo boards commonly found in kitchens. The edges of the board are rounded for durability and comfortable handling. Food-grade 304 stainless steel is used for the rims and screws, ensuring long-lasting performance and resistance to corrosion. The brushed and polished rim achieves a seamless appearance, making any welds invisible.
Hazuto is not just a cutting board; it is a versatile tool that can be used for everyday cutting or serving bread, cheese, salad, fruits, and even steak. Its sleek design allows it to be displayed as a decorative piece or used as a table condiment tray, complementing various atmospheres. The board's compact size makes it suitable for space-conscious urban kitchens, while still providing enough space for the needs of a small family.
The Hazuto project started in October 2019, with the final design completed by December 2019. The first batch of samples was made in January 2020. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted, including analysis of online retailers, industry reports, and small focus group meetings. This research helped shape the size, materials, and functions of the board to meet user expectations and market trends. The designers overcame challenges in achieving the concept's simplicity and execution, ensuring that the metal rim seamlessly integrates with the board.
Hazuto has already received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2020. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
With its unique combination of wood and metal, Hazuto brings a fresh and modern aesthetic to the kitchen. Its functional design, durability, and eye-catching appearance make it a must-have for any design-conscious home.
